Mid-Carolina Workforce Development Board

The Mid-Carolina Workforce Development Board (MCWDB) was created and formed in July 2022 by strategic partnership and long-term planning and discussion by county leadership in each of the respective North Carolina counties of Cumberland, Harnett, and Sampson. One of the many goals of this new MCWDB in North Carolina is to be the most innovative and performance-driven workforce development program in the State of North Carolina. A program built around partnerships, teamwork, and collaboration has been the mantra for the years of planning and development leading up to the formation of the new local area. With a primary focus of “work first,” the vision of the new workforce board is to meet people and businesses “where they are.”

The Mid-Carolina Workforce Development Board (MCWDB) is appointed by the Chief Elected Officials (county commissioners) of each of the three counties in our region. At least 51% of our board must be private sector business members. The remaining are public sector members and represent many of our partner agencies. The private sector members are strategically chosen by county and economic sectors representative of our region. The chairperson of the board must be a private sector member and is elected by the other board members.

The purpose of the MCWDB is to provide policy, planning, and oversight for local workforce development programs and to address workforce issues as identified by the communities that they represent. The MCWDB is responsible for designing a service delivery system that meets the needs of local businesses who are trying to find qualified applicants to fill their employment openings by providing training scholarships to those individuals who are eligible and basic employment services and referrals to those who are not. Our mission is to build a competitive workforce and positively influence the economic development of our region.
